As regards A of the annexed despatch,I at-
tach, for reference, a statement which explains the matter.
The statement of Liabilities and Assets which is Enclosure
4,contains on the Assets side, two items, viz., Arrears of Tax
es and Arrears of Crown Rent, which fell into Revenue during
1897, and also contains, on the Liabilities side, five items
viz.,Military Contribution, Refund of Taxes, Transit Charges,
Cual Pensions due to Police Officers and Pensions que to Police
Officers which fell into Expenditure auring 1897.
These items of Revenue and Expenditure, amouri -
ing to $54,080.91 and $38,137.75 respectively, were included
in Enclosure 5 in the estimated Revenue and estimated Ex-
penditure for 1897, and would have appeared twice over in
Enclosure 5 had the balance of Assets of 1896 been therein
put down at $548,964. 46. The difference between
$54,080.91
and
$38,137.73
viz:- $15,943.18
